Voldemort, the complete personification of the Muggle Mindset, wished to control nature and uncover all of her secrets. But as we later learn, his understanding of life and nature and love was perhaps more limited than any one alive. And for those searching for the Deathly Hallows, the search to conquer that last mystery that is death, they will all fail on this quest. Mystery is mystery for a reason. Dumbledore may not have understood this in his youth, but he eventually came around to finding delight and humor in the fact that the unknown is the unknown.
As Igor Karkaroff, head of Durmstrang asks his fellow headmaster, Dumbledore head of Hogwarts, "are we not right to protect our school's secrets, and right to protect them?'" (GoF 417) Dumbledore replies amicably:
""'Oh I would never dream of assuming I know all of Hogwarts' secrets, Igor....Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamber pots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished. But I must keep an eye out for it. Possibly it is only accessible at five-thirty in the morning. Or it may only appear at the quarter of the moon - or when the seeker has an exceptionally full bladder'" (GoF 418).
We may later learn more of the secrets of this room that Dumbledore discovered, but even then, have we as readers discovered all of the secrets of Hogwarts? There will always be more secrets. There will always be more mystery. The human wish to learn and be curious is beautiful. The Muggle Minded wish to uncloak and master all that is mysterious is foolish and silly.
As scientists, theologians, and simple people in relationship with other people, we will NEVER uncover all of the world's mysteries and secrets. That is why night is so beautiful. That is why death is beautiful. That is why the mystery and the secret is the mystery and the secret. The sooner we can delight in mystery like children, the better off we will be and the more fully and humbly and opened we will live within the magic of this world.
