“That which Voldemort does not value, he takes no trouble to comprehend. Of house-elves and children’s tales, of love, loyalty, and innocence, Voldemort knows and understands nothing. Nothing. That they all have a power beyond his own, a power beyond the reach of any magic, is a truth he has never grasped.” (Deathly Hallows page 710).

If we break this quote down, we can learn a lot about what Dumbledore has to teach us about the nature of power. True power does not exist in Voldemort’s mutilated brand of might. True power exists in “house-elves and children’s tales, of love, loyalty, and innocence.” True power is something that each of us has access to at every moment regardless of our age, regardless of our gender, our race, ethnicity, sexuality, or creed. True power is stepping into ourselves. True power is what Harry and the Potters call, “one thing that I’ve got. One thing that you’ve got inside you too. One thing that we’ve got. And the one thing we’ve got is enough to save us all!”

So let’s talk about this. Power is probably at the height of our culture’s obsession. And for every Wizard, power is important. But if there is a distinction between true power and false power I think we better have that discussion now. Let’s talk about it.

In Harry’s world, what is false power and what is true power? And in our world, what is false power and what is true power?

But isn't that what Voldemort has? Bellatrix, for one, legitimately believes in the cause. And she certainly desires to please Voldemort, in a very real way. So by your reckoning, don't you think that you're saying voldemort has true power? Sure, she fears Voldemort, but don't you think that in a way some members of Dumbledore Army fear, and honor Harry?

I think that true power is feeling comfortable with yourself. Being OK with who you are, through self acceptance, you will set a truly positive example for others. By giving yourself permission to be who you are, you will, without even knowing it, give others the same freedom. And that is true power.

If we want it, we all have it! We all have true power to change the world for the better! Whether we have "followers" or not, we can still be a beautiful people, and that yields true power!

I think in both Harry's world and our world true power is achieved when a leader is able to command with respect. When followers do as the leader pleases because they believe in both the legitimacy of what is being asked of them, and a sincere desire to please the leader. Whereas false power is obtained illegitimately (such as election fraud, military coups). The leader is not respected by the followers, but they continue to do the leader's bidding out of fear.

In Harry Potter, leaders such as Dumbledore and Harry held true power because their followers respected them and did what they asked out of desire to please them and a belief in the legitimacy of their requests.

In contrast, characters such as Umbridge (who did not gain her power legitimately through respectability but through invented Ministry Decrees); Fudge (whose legitimacy was lost because many in the wizarding community did not support his actions as a leader); and Voldemort (who maintained followers by fear), all ruled under false power.
