It's Yule weekend, and my parents one year wedding anniversary (state recognized!). One of the busiest weekends of the year for me!

Money made from twilight series supports homophobic organizations!

So, I am sure everyone here has heard of twilight. Newspapers have been calling it “the next Harry Potter” for many years, but to no avail.
I’ve recently learned a disturbing fact about Stephanie Meyer, the author of the twilight Saga.
Stephanie Meyer is a strict Mormon, which all into itself, I have absolutely no problem with! Also, Stephanie Meyer, like other Mormons, pays a tithe, which means a certain percent of the money she earns gets donated to the Mormon church, again, that, all u… Continue

Sitting by your side, powerless.

I sit by your side, I watch the drug that is poisoned flow into your veins, almost killing you, but saving your life.
A year ago I thought you were invincible, but now you look so weak. You might even die.
You sleep because that’s all you can do, and I watch you, because that’s all I can do.
Other patrons of the hospital are around us, death pushing in from all sides. I try not to stare, because I don’t want to see.
I try to laugh through it, pushing my way through the pain.
The TV in the hospit… Continue

NaNoWriMo

On October 19th, I discovered a curiously titled discussion in the forums section of the HPA; NaNoWriMo. And so my adventure began.
After reading the discussion, I decided to check out the website, and was instantly enchanted. National novel writing month (NaNoWriMo), is a program where thousands of aspiring authors around the world attempt to write 50,000 word novels by the end of November.
Other than blogs, I had never written any… Continue

Magical Acts Of Kindness Week, part 1

my first magical act of kindness took place at a physical therapy office. There are always sad and concerned looking people, sitting around waiting to be seen by the doctor, so I figured I would do a little something to get there spirits up. I bought a pad of sticky notes along with me to the office, and left too on the bathroom mirror, one saying "you are beautiful" and the other "to the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world". I watched as an old woman entered the… Continue

What Gen. Scott Gratian said today in the Washington Post

Today in an article four the Washington Post special envoy to Sudan Gen. Scott Gratian spoke of his plans for peace in Darfur: "We've got to think about giving out cookies. Kids, countries, they react to gold stars, smiley faces, handshakes, agreements, talk, engagement," He said.
this is completely unacceptable! he has done very little for Darfur, and now he says that thay all n… Continue

Thanks, I read your blog post. Its rather disturbing that something like Twilight could have such a huge impact.

Jesca Hoop sings more alternative style music. Its very pretty.
Here is one of her songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDeJv7K3Ad8

Tell your parents "Happy Aniversary!" Happy Yule as well. :)

What does Yule celebrate? A bunch of people mentioned it in my religion speeches in class, but only in passing.

Thanks! The quote was on the back of a book about Darfur I got awhile ago called Not on Our Watch.

You're right - it is the last day of Hanukkah! Thanks for remembering (:
It was definitely lots of fun, despite the falsely named "Holiday Break" falling conveniently on Christmas every single year and only by chance on Hanukkah. (One of the benefits of unschooling, no?)

Hi Vanessa!

I;m breaking from writing and sneaking on here briefly, Hee hee! Anyway, Happy early Yule (since I won't be on here when it actually is Yule). What kind of stuff do you do for Yule? Decorations? Presents? Special food?

Also, (I know you've been asked a million times, but I'm still curious) What happened with Twilight? I heard there was a rumor that Stephanie Meyer gave money to some group or something, but I couldn't find specifics.

Hi again!
I'd love to hear what you have to say on Twilight. :) I personally dislike it for the bad writing and the fact that it sends a very anti-femininst message to girls.

I just found an artist that I really like called Jesca Hoop. Her songs are so pretty. Have you heard of her?

Hi Vanessa!

I haven't talked to you for awhile, so I wandered over to your page. I'm curious, how did Twilight stop gays from marrying? I haven't heard anything about that! I don't like Twilight because of the writing, but I feel like after you tell me this, I'll dislike it even more.

Hey Vanessa,

First off, thanks for letting me know about the spammers. The person you mentioned has been suspended, although I'm curious to know if her account was phished (stolen by spambots) or if it was actually her doing the spamming.

I definitely think you should try out morning pages; I find it really relaxing. It's something that probably would be easier with voice-recognition software, and it's great because if the software makes a typo, it doesn't even matter because you're not publishing it anywhere for anyone else to see (unless you want to).

I'm alone on the Ning right now too, although that happens a lot, especially because I live in California and many Ning users are on East Coast (EST) time. Then again, some users don't even live in the US!

Although we don't have a blog project, we do have a video project! Did you see the recent post by Malory? (There's also an example that Andrew did that you can see -- it's currently embedded in the most recent blog post.)

Anyway, my holidays have been going pretty well, although I'm Jewish and I don't get a single day off for Chanukkah, but such is life... you get the solstice off, though, right? Is that the most important holiday? (Forgive me for my ignorance in that regard.)

Hey Vanessa,

In terms of a Ning Team, that might unfortunately be a rather distant thing. It's just that I've been told that "at some point" I may get a Ning Team. (Not that I wouldn't want you on the team! I just want to be clear that this probably won't be happening for a while.) I'd assume that you wouldn't need to join the staff until the Ning Team starts getting developed. But if (and when!) it happens, I'll contact you. I don't know that I have the authority to "give" you a position on the Ning Team, but I would certainly put in a good word for you! (And Andrew knows you really well, and recommended that you join!)

Morning pages are when, as soon as you wake up, you write three pages about whatever comes to your mind. It's supposed to be a good exercise for calm and for creativity.

You mentioned regular blogs every week, and that's something I've really been pushing for! It's been on my list of "Ideas for the Ning" for quite a while, but at this point I think that may have to wait until we have a Ning Team. Another thing I've been espousing is having HPA Chat meetings since the chat room is often so quiet (as you've undoubtedly noticed).

Thanks for the compliment about my blog (although I feel it was a bit disjointed now that I read it again).

So yeah! That's about it for now, I think!
