Categorizing The Hunger Games (Mockingjay SPOILER WARNINGS)

After finishing Mockingjay this last week, I went into a bookstore and asked them what section Mockingjay belongs in (besides "Young Adult"). Each person said, "Fantasy." My reply was, "But this is a novel set in a dystopic future - and while there is an element of the fantastical to that, really does that make the books "fantasy?" And yes, there certainly is fantastical technology employed in the Arena and even genetically created "mutts" - but how is using a science fictiony twist to genetics… Continue

for my birthday: thank you!

I do not know where to begin. I really don't. What you all did for my birthday was absolutely extraordinary. The video that was captained by Elin, Billy, and so many others - featuring so many of our most active Ning members: wow. Wow, wow, wow. I am in disbelief. And I am so grateful. Beyond words. I watched the video with a couple of very close friends and I wanted to cry and somehow I was just stunned into silence. I felt a little strange sitting next to friends after we all watched a video… Continue

Conversations about Homophobia, etc

I'm going to make a very straightforward point. There are members of this community who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and/or queer. The official HPA stance on this is that these members are completely and utterly equal to any one else. In fact, the only thing that separates them is that they have had to more often act on their courage than the heterosexual majority by virtue of the fact that our entire culture permeates a status quo that those who are straight, white, male, and… Continue

Mr. Slack Goes To Washington

I just arrived in DC where I'll be speaking at the Pledge 2 Protect conference about how anti-genocide activists can create viral videos, and of course promoting the HPA.

I feel as though I have been slightly disconnected from the anti-genocide movement for a bit - in part because the HPA has been focusing on Leaky Con, Azkatraz, WWDD, Nine and Three Quarters, Magical Acts of Kindness, Wrock 4 Equality, etc. and in part because I feel that… Continue

Another Equality Update: this is neck and neck!

This election couldn't be more neck and neck. The voter turn out was huge today - far more than what folks expected in Maine. I'm a bit on the edge of my seat: Nate Silver sounds a lot less optimistic than he did earlier today. Rural votes are still coming in. This is pretty nerve racking. But this really really really could go in either direction.

Remus Lupin would be proud of all the work you and the HPA do on behalf of those whom society does not look upon favorably!

Hey Andrew,

I was wondering if we were going to do anything in any way to aid the victims and those getting sick from the Swine Flu? Or are we going to see if it just blows over?

Hey Andrew! I don't think I took the chance say thanks you so much for letting me be on the podcast, and allowing me to spread the awareness of Invisible Children! I was literally so nervous, I was shaking when you asked me if I wanted to be on the call. I'm so excited that I got the chance to promote the noble cause of IC! I'm really looking forward to working with you and the rest of the HPA staff! Hopefully, when you're not busy, we'll talk more in depth about the project. Again, thank you so much! It's unbelievable that I was just on the HPA podcast :)

much peace,
Angelia

Hey Andrew, it's Kate Artemis from the Verona Project! I can't get on Yahoo at school so I thought I'd just comment. How are you?
We are currently updating the site (literally. Sarah and I are typing it right now) so if you need more information about us you can check there at theveronaproject.synthasite.com.
We will have a not-so-temporary-and-more-awesome website up as soon as we pay the people nineteen dollars for a site domain. Should be soon. That website will be theveronaproject.com. I'll shoot you an email when that happens. Also, our PayPal account is underway. I'm activating my bank account today after school. I'll include that in the email too, once I send it.
Any other questions feel free to email me.
Thanks!
Kate/Artemis/whatever my name is...

Hi Andrew!
At the kickoff production of unlimited enthusiasm expo 2008 I met you.
I didn't expect to see you, so I was taken off guard. There was so much I wanted to say to you! I wanted to tell you how much you inspire me. I wanted to thank you for everything you gave me, a cause to fight for, the means to fight and a group of people I finally feel I belong with.
Instead I didn't really say anything, you said I should start a chapter in my school, and I said " I am unschooled", that was what I managed to get out. So even though it isn't the same as hearing it from someone in person, I just wanted to let you know how much you have touched my life!
As Paul played "the weapon," I danced right next to you, and as we all put our arms around each other, and I put my arm around you, I started to cry, it was so profound and spiritual, I was dancing with a group of people who really cared. and suddenly I wasn't dancing for me, I was dancing for all the people around the world, all the people you brought to my attention.
I have a picture of us together, you're making a fun face, and gazing over your glasses at the camera, I am smiling, just smiling.
So I just wanted to say thank you, and you have truly touched my life, and changed me for the better!

Hey Andrew! As an exchange student I have five books with me in the new country, only one of which is really fit to donate. I was looking for the best way to contribute and found some great stuff via Oxfam. I'll link to my post on the Gryffindor discussion... if you could get back to me and say whether or not this is do able and how many points a library would be, etc., that would be great... I want to know it's kosher before I pursue this instead of another method.
Here's the link to the discussion detailing the plan: http://thehpalliance.ning.com/group/gryffindor/forum/topics/donating-via-oxfamis-this
Thanks for all you do. :)
